Whatever settings the pro the bride&groom have hired is using.
It is far too ambiguous a question unless you can add more detail. You need to describe the lens or lenses you have, whether it is indoors or outdoors, whether you have a flash or strobe etc. All of these factors can make a big difference to the type of response you want.
if your asking, then is this your first wedding?
either set auto… and click away.
or set A, and select F5.6 - F8 this will control the DOF and turn the background into a fuzzy mess. (allowing the weeding party to stand out)
one thing, you realise your flash is no good above 25 feet. and because the bride will be in white, and the groom in black, where you meter is as important as everything else.
ok, white dress, in sunshine, if you expose for that, the dress will look great, and the bride will be so underexposed… use FORCE flash option, itll behave like a fill flash, lighting the face.
on auto the flash wont fire if theres lots of ambient light, youll get lots of underexposed shots… prefect skies, dark subjects.
learn to focus on your subject, half cock the shutter, and recompose… its not as hard as it seems.
and dont panic…
Use Auto and just hope for the best.
Use either Aperture-priority mode or Shutter priority mode… either one I don’t like actually. But you can customize them better. An Auto mode will make do though - just photoshop it later.
I normally use manual or semi-manual mode - but then again, I’ve developed an eye for photography and could adjust shutter and aperture without looking.
I’d adjust the photographer. Does the bride know you have no idea how to use your fancy camera?
Honestly, if you are here asking this, just use Program. It will get you in the ballpark at least half the time. You can check the winky-blinkys on the histogram and use exposure compensation when needed. Use the lowest ISO that will give you handholding shutter speed. But use higher ISO when necessary. Noise is better than blur. I do NOT suggest using the manual mode, or even aperture priority if you have no idea what you’re doing. Playing with camera settings willy-nilly at the event is not a good idea.
Good luck, but plan on bringing the Weber.
I hope you have a good lawyer so when the bridal couple sues you maybe you’ll at least get to keep your “family jewels” although bridezilla may just rip them off herself.
If you’re smart you’ll cancel this fiasco and tell the couple to hire a real photographer.
Modes are generally junk and try and give you an “average” shot.
The best thing to do is to be educated and experienced enough to know what works best. Most people that get outstanding images work in manual, aperture priority or shutter priority.
Just put it on auto, or the portrait mode, don’t be hesitant or afraid to take certain shots. Be confident and act like you know what you’re doing. Most likely you’re related to the bride or groom or a friend, and they didn’t want to spend 1000s of dollars on a photographer who’d do mediocre work(which is 95% of the “pro” wedding photographers out there) and figured you’d be just as good. Which most likely is true. Screw all the wedding photographers who try to make ends meet by charging a ridiculous amount of money for some photos.
