There is more to photography than “point” and “shoot”.
The more you learn about it (via books and tutorials), the more you are able to figure out why something doesn’t look right and what to do about it.
Start with your manual – read it, then practice. Read it again, practice some more. Experiment and pay attention to what worked and what didn’t.
Your little camera has big limitations, but can still take decent photos as long as the light is good. It is up to YOU to get the most out of it.
It sound like you are over exposing the face but not enough light is falling onto the background. You have to know the limits of your camera/flash.
The light output is not large/sufficient enough to achieve both. You can help by having the subject closer to the background and the background being lighter or lit by other means than the flash on the camera. Experiment so that you know what are the limits and what you can achieve in a real situation.
Regards.
